The Counterfeit Coin Story by Ken Peters

This book will fascinate anyone interested in coinage. The author* reveals how the simple coin has led thousands into dark, daring, daft and sometimes even comic endeavours to take nefarious and distinctly dangerous shortcuts to riches. It includes cameos of amazing individuals such as the debonair Becker, who moved in high circles; the Scotsman who thought he would create his own small change, only to learn that the coin he was engraving had ceased to be legal tender; Hamid Muhammad, who avoided being beheaded for counterfeiting by becoming his country's first official coin engraver - and many others...

At times, counterfeiting epidemics have occurred, when, incredibly, more counterfeit coins than genuine were in circulation. Governments introduced draconian laws to discourage counterfeiting, and further laws to 'enforce' the existing laws! Many 'improvements' were introduced to make forging more difficult, but the fakers' skills also improved. This running battle, which started around 575 B.C. is still continuing today.

Over 200 pages, in large format (270 x 210 mm), packed with information, illustration, anecdotes and references. Great value. ISBN 0-9543487-0-2

* Ken Peters, author of books on a variety of subjects, has spent years on this 'labour of love', coin counterfeiting being an absorbing and enduring interest. He is President of the COUNTERFEIT COIN CLUB, which has members in Britain, Europe and the Americas. He plans to follow up this story with a series of books and booklets on different aspects of coin counterfeiting - identification, reference, bibliography, known examples, etc.
